mavic ksyriums...... ELITE vs SL?
tomorrow im going into buy a set of ksyrium elite wheels(2008 model). Before i do i was just wondering if anyone has ridden on both SL's and elites and if they could tell me if they noticed a noticible difference. the difference in prices between the two is about $1000nzd.
I own the Elite and have ridden two short rides (about 12 miles overall) on the SL's. Honestly I didn't feel a difference, but the SL's are appreciably lighter and definitely have some serious bling factor. For me, I won't buy a wheelset (mtn or road) that's too expensive. In my experience they aren't usually as durable and can be pretty expensive to service. Plus, our roads here are horrible and race wheelsets get dinged up too quickly. When I replace the wheels on my road bike, I won't go with Mavic again....the rear hub design is still crap and requires frequent service to keep it lasting the longest. They've improved them slightly after the '06 models, but there are still better wheels out there for the same money or less (and if your bike shop doesn't have the right cassette body or spokes in stock, you can plan on a very long wait from Mavic to get the parts in).
I like my Elites, but they came on the bike and when the time comes, I'm ditching them for something non-Mavic. Not a bad wheel overall, though. I have a couple dings in them but they've stayed true over about 2,300 miles so far.
